ooooooooo I’m so excited! Something new and cool just happened to the internet! Get your excited pants on because there is a hot new iPhone keyboard which makes scheduling meetings super easy. Wait. What? Trust me, just check it out, fresh off the hotness: Meet by Sunrise. There are videos behind that link. They are prettier than my ugly words.
If you haven’t tried Sunrise yet then, for once, I’m going to be understanding. The price is every kinds of free so that is no excuse (that means you pay zero dollars for it). But, Sunrise is a calendar app and that space is incredibly crowded. There are not only tons of low quality calendar apps lowsy-ing up the app store, but even quite a few good ones. Personally I my vote still goes to Fantastical for reasons already covered here, here, and here. Those are all reviews by the way. You can click on them. And read them… but you don’t have to because we are talking about sunrise and Meet.
Meet is amazing because it allows you, from any app on your phone, to easily propose some times for a meeting. The person on the receiving end gets a friendly web interface to accept from. Then, boom, all the pain of scheduling a meeting is gone. It is designed for one-on-one meetings, so it won’t help you for huge invites to large groups. But, that is perfect because large invites shouldn’t be possible with Meet. If you are coordinating a meeting between many people, you should probably sit down and plan it out carefully. Meet is meant for a very focused use case: quick scheduling.
I’m working on a career move which means hundreds of coffee chats and hours spent trying to make schedules align. Meet is already saving me time, making my life easier, and (here is the best part) making me look cool and like I know about the new cool tools freshly available to the world. Listen, as I write this, Meet came out today. Like 12 hours ago. How cool are you going to look if you install it and start sending your friends fancy invite links before they even know how to install a second keyboard? Moderately cool. That is how cool. But that is pretty good!
In short, Meet is a great way to save time and pain on something that all modern humans interacting with other modern humans do. It is beautifully implemented and the creative use of a custom keyboard is ground breaking. This will inspire other developers to create cool new tools via keyboards and give me more things to talk about in this blog. It is win win. Maybe install Sunrise, follow the in app instructions to load the Meet keyboard and send me an invite so that I can interact with an actual human every once in a while.
Also available on Android but I can neither confirm nor deny claims of hotness on other platforms ↩
AKA Microsoft after Sunrise’s recent acquisition. But for those who don’t follow tech news closely and haven’t seen Microsoft’s new hustle, I don’t want to scare you. But, seriously, if this kind of innovation is what happens when a company is acquired by Microsoft, then I’m all for sending Satya Nadella on a shopping spree. ↩
In short, I love Fantastical’s super fast event creation using natural language processing… Sunrise might steal my heart with Meet though ↩
“One-to-one” ewww? I hate when people call things something that is different from what I call things ↩
Anyone have any jobs laying around that they want to give me? Cool. Thanks ↩
